Saturday, July 22nd / 2 -6 pm
CCA’s Altman Riddick Gallery @ 630 Avenue A in York
Join us for a thank you celebration of Co-Director Emeritus Shana Berger and Nathan Purath, along with the work of Birmingham artist Darius Hill.
Catch-up, fill ‘em in, and hug-it-out with former directors Shana and Nathan. Be a part of our potluck meal and Darius Hill’s recently developed work “Throne.” The event is free and open to the public. Attendance and participation are encouraged.
Shana Berger and Nathan Purath joined the Coleman Center for the Arts’ family in 2005, driving the organization with new artistic rigor. They brought their distinct notions of social practice and arts-centered activism to Sumter County communities; during their tenure Berger and Purath developed numerous arts education programs and exhibitions and expanded the Coleman Center’s visiting artists series, all while advocating for the organization and Black Belt region.
Darius Hill continues his ongoing relationship with the region. Hill’s work “Throne” is a social sculpture in the form of a ceremonial chair. Guests can activate the space and work by taking their “regal” seat. Photography and sharing on social media are encouraged. “Throne” builds on themes in Hill’s work, including black identity, art history, and American Pop culture.
